ERIOCAULON IN THE AQUARIUM

General information, descriptions, conditions of detention

Eriocaulon

Eriocaulon is decorations of every aquarium. They blend in with any decorative stones, roots, create and emphasize complex landscapes designs. They are a great fit for an aquarium of any volume. Possible to use as foreground and background decoration. The main disadvantage of these exotic plants being their difficult cultivation. It's possible so say that successfull maintaining of this group of plants is a credit to any aquarist.

Eriocaulon is a very unusual plant and immediately catches the eye, eclipsing by its decorative look all other plants grown in the aquarium. Especially beautiful Eriocaulons that are grown in groups of 3-5 bushes, but by itself the plant is also pretty. In designer aquariums this plant is used to visually mark the line between the front and middle plans.

Maintaining Eriocaulon in the aquarium is simple and complex at the same time. Simple for those who have already experienced in maintaining high tech tanks. Because those conditions are needed for normal life and beautiful appearance of Eriocaulons. Soil, strong productive filtration system, CO2 supply, strong light and the daily application of fertilizers. In general - all the "charms" of high tech tanks. Regarding lighting the aquariums with Eriocaulons, on the Internet you can find information about necessary intensity of not less than 1 watt per liter and for no less than 12 hours. In authors' experience it is not the case in the real world at all. Eriocaulons grow and multiply well at light of 0.6 watt per liter (40-50Lm / l) at day light of 10 hours. There is also no need to constantly apply CO2. Plants thrive as well on daily feed only. But noted that with a night aeration Eriocaulon's look have somewhat improved. Water parameters to maintain Eriocaulon can advise as following: the temperature of 24-26 0 C, dkH 1-4 0, GH 4-8 0, pH 5,5-6.8. Due to the fact that the root system Eriocaulon is huge and sometimes exceed the plant itself several times over, the ground height should be at least 8-9cm. It is also worth noting that the soil should be nutritious.

Eriocaulon setaceum

The aquarium Eriocaulon can be divided into 3 groups. The first group - a plant for the background. Second - for the middle and the third - a front or section between the middle and the foreground.

Eriocaulon setaceum is perfectly suited for the background. Beautiful stem plants with moderate growth and a hand-fan of green needle-shaped, slightly curved arc down leaves, bristle or hairlike collected into a very dense rosette and topped with luxurious tip, up to 16 cm in diameter. Its height (depending on the conditions) from 10 to 40 cm. With a whorl of leaves, needles outlets evenly distributed along the elongated and often branched at the top of the white stem. As stems grow up they are constantly split, so after some time at the top is formed luxurious bush-sphere.

Eriocaulon sp.Vietnam

The presence of relatively high Eriocaulons such as the Eriocaulon sp.Goias makes it possible to decorate the middle ground. Eriocaulon sp.Goias, and Eriocaulon sp.Vietnam, something like a Echinodorus tenellus. In various conditions the plants from this group grow to 10 - 25cm. Plants tend to constantly divide, of course, under favorable conditions. This contributes to the rapid formation of thick bright (for Goias) or darker- (for Vietnam) green areas in the middle ground. Plants of this group like for a small flow, bright light, but it must be ensured that on the plant's leaves were not formed algae, since the presence of food and bright light may contribute to their occurrence.

Eriocaulon cinereum

The third group of plants - the most beautiful and memorable. This is the very green "hedgehogs", which give the aquarium a unique image. Eriocaulon cinereum is the best fit for decoration foreground. Hundreds of needles 1 mm thick and 5-6 cm long in bright green color are collected in one outlet, creating the impression that in the aquarium has lodged a green sea urchin.

I would like to warn those who are eager to create a "carpet" from eriocaulons of this group. Eriocaulons only partly suited to the role of ground cover plants. Create a coating comparable to that obtained using Hemianthus callitrichoides "Cuba", will not work. Plants visually interfere with each other, and it seems that they pierce each other with their needles.

Eriocaulon sp.Ratonagiriuni

The group has its own gaint and dwarf plants . For example, Eriocaulon sp.Ratonagiriuni considered the smallest and most compact of all the bush-like Eriocaulon. Its size varies up to 2 cm. Little green bushes like a young fir trees, make their way to the surface of the ground! Delicate leaves, needles turn in to an amazing underwater world of fairyland. But it is possible that the size of this particular species depends on habitat conditions. The authors have seen Eriocaulon sp.Ratonagiriuni of about 5cm.

Eriocaulon sp.Quinquangulare Red

Absolutely alone in a slender row of Eriocaulons are so-called "red Eriocaulon". These include Eriocaulon sp.Quinquangulare Red. These plants relatively recently appeared in aquaculture, and has not yet taken its niche in aquariums. But the bright colors and an unusual form saying that this plant will soon conquer our aquariums. Although the prices of these types of Eriocaulons and their seeds are prohibitive. Let us hope that the spread of demand for red shapes Eriocaulon will drop their prices. It should be noted that it is believed that the red shapes Eriocaulon - are not underwater plants, but rather vivarium. And in a completely immersed state can live from 3 months to 6 months.

Eriocaulon Tank

Using Eriocaulon in aquascape fraught with some problems of aesthetic plan. It is believed that because of its remarkable appearance Eriocaulons are more "alien" in the aquascape and do not meet the requirements of a "natural aquarium". This can be read in the article "Eriocaulon in the aquascape". However, thanks to its unusual appearance they look amazing in a planted aquarium or in any other. But still it is desirable to contain these species to the aquarium in which live only representatives Eriocaulaceae family. Such an aquarium will suit all kinds Eriocaulons and also their closest relatives - Syngonanthus or Toninas. Consistency of water parameters will promote healthy appearance of plants and of the entire tank as a whole. An example of such species aquarium can be seen in the photo.
